March 29, 1944: The Portales Daily News: A group of selectees left this morning for Santa Fe to be inducted into the Navy. Included were Wayne Stratton, Royal Paul Hawkins, Thomas Jefferson Moore, J.C. Shaffer, Winfred Henry Gibbs and Elbert Ray Sanders.

The Portales Daily Tribune reported that Elbert Munsey was returning to the pharmacy field and joining the B & J Pharmacy staff after a short stint farming. Munsey then became the oldest pharmacist in Portales.
