The Portales News-Tribune reported the national gas pinch was hitting the area, causing three Portales fuel stations to place “No Gas” signs at their stores. However, the local prices were slightly cheaper than the national average. Gas cost 43 cents at many local stations while the nation-wide average was 49 cents.
A semi-trailer driven by a Louisiana trucker slammed into a filling station in Kenna while trying to avoid hitting a San Diego, Calif., family who was in a car turning left into the station. The truck driver was the only one seriously injured.
