Portales Past: March 23, 1955

March 23, 1955: State highway crews arrived to haul caliche for the surface of the Portales road to the Clovis Air Force Base. County commissioners said they had driven the road recently and “had to be pulled through the deep sand by a road grader,” The Portales Daily News reported.

No injuries reported in fire

Freedom New Mexico Fire damaged a home on South Roosevelt Road 3 around midnight Monday morning. Portales Fire Department fire investigator Mike Inge said no one was injured. Inge said he is waiting for an insurance investigator to determine the cause and said the fire started in the area of the laundry room.
