Portales Past: March 27, 1960

March 27, 1960: Mountain States Telephone Co. and Roosevelt County Telephone Co-op began “extended area service” for county telephone users. It meant subscribers in Dora, Causey, Milnesand and Elida could call Portales (and vice versa) directly, without going through a toll operator. About 3,800 telephones were in use in the county.
