June 19, 1945: Travelers were pleased to learn of plans to “blacktop” state highway 63 connecting Portales to Arch. “The Arch road has been one of the worst in the county for years,” The Portales Daily News reported. “It is extremely rough in dry weather and almost impassable in wet weather.”
